Carreglwyd Estate Wedding Photography

Carreglwyd Estate is a private country estate near Llanfaethlu, at the north-western tip of Anglesey, set between mountains and sea with its own lake, woodland and landscaped gardens. For couples planning a wedding here, the estate offers everything I love photographically: a restored barn, a lakeside setting, woodland, open water and real coastal wildness, with space for relaxed, unscripted editorial portraits.

I am Martin Japheth, a North Wales wedding photographer creating natural, signature wedding stories with a refined editorial finish. My approach is calm, unobtrusive and gently directed when needed, so your photographs feel beautiful without your day feeling staged.

Stunning locations

Carreglwyd offers a wonderful mix of restored barn interiors, a lake, woodland and water views, all held within a working private estate. The best photographs often come from using the setting slowly and thoughtfully, letting the light, the landscape and the emotion of the day lead the story.

The lake, the boathouse and the water’s edge at Carreglwyd Estate

The lake, the boathouse and the water’s edge

The estate’s lake is the heart of Carreglwyd’s wedding photography. With its boathouse and floating pontoon used for outdoor lakeside ceremonies, and a front lawn that looks out across the water to the main house, this is a setting made for reflective, atmospheric imagery. Still water at golden hour gives some of the most romantic frames the estate has to offer.

Woodland and the wider estate

Beyond the lake, the estate’s woodland offers a quieter, more intimate backdrop, with a forest setting that can be used for ceremonies and for sheltered, light-dappled portraits. In spring the bluebell woods are especially beautiful. The surrounding Anglesey landscape, with its mountain and sea views and nearby beaches, means there is scope to step out for dramatic coastal portraits when the day allows.

The Long Barn, The Stables and interior details

The restored Long Barn and the neighbouring Stables, with its gallery above, give character-rich indoor spaces for the wedding meal, the party and atmospheric detail photography. The courtyard between them, often set with a marquee or bar, is a natural gathering point for candid moments. These interiors are especially valuable if the Anglesey weather turns, offering texture, warmth and architectural interest whatever the forecast.

Planning tips & FAQ

Is Carreglwyd Estate a good venue for editorial wedding portraits?

Yes. Carreglwyd Estate works beautifully for editorial wedding portraits because it combines romantic architecture, landscaped grounds, waterside views and atmospheric interiors. This gives couples a wide range of elegant portrait options without needing to leave the venue.

What happens if it rains at Carreglwyd Estate?

Carreglwyd is a dry-hire, exclusive-use estate, so timings are relaxed and entirely yours. I plan lakeside and woodland portrait windows around the light rather than the schedule, and always keep an indoor plan for the barn and stables in case the coast throws weather at us.

Can we have natural photographs as well as editorial portraits?

Yes. Most of the day is captured naturally and unobtrusively, focusing on real emotion, family, atmosphere and the flow of the wedding. For portraits, I use gentle direction so the images feel refined without looking stiff or overly posed.

When is the best time for portraits at Carreglwyd?

The best time depends on the season, weather and timeline, but softer light later in the day is often beautiful for couple portraits. During the pre-wedding design consultation, I look at the venue, light and timings to plan the strongest options.

Do you include a venue consultation?

Yes. My wedding packages include a pre-wedding venue design consultation, where we plan light, portrait locations, rain options and the flow of the photography. This is especially useful at a venue like Château Rhianfa, where there are several strong photographic areas.
