Plas Cadnant Wedding Portraits & Signature Photography

Menai Bridge

Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens is one of Anglesey’s most beautiful portrait locations, a 200-acre private estate tucked away near Menai Bridge, beside the Menai Strait. Restored over the past thirty years, its hidden gardens offer a curving walled garden, a secret valley with waterfalls and river, woodland and reflective pools. It is not a wedding reception venue, but as a location for signature portraits, engagement shoots and style shoots it is hard to match anywhere in North Wales.

I am Martin Japheth, a North Wales wedding and editorial photographer creating natural, signature portraits with a refined editorial finish. My approach is calm, unobtrusive and gently directed when needed, so your photographs feel beautiful without feeling staged. Plas Cadnant is a location I know and love to photograph in.

Stunning locations

Plas Cadnant offers remarkable variety within a single hidden estate: the walled garden, the valley gardens, woodland and water all sit within a short walk of one another. The best portraits come from moving slowly through the gardens, letting the light, the water and the mood of the session lead the story.

The walled garden and reflecting pool

The restored walled garden, with its unusual curving walls, terrace and pool, is the elegant heart of Plas Cadnant. It gives a sheltered, intimate setting for couple portraits, with the reflecting pool and yew walk offering calm, timeless frames. This is where the estate’s refined character comes through most strongly.

The secret valley garden and waterfalls

Below the house lies the valley garden, with its three waterfalls and the River Cadnant running through it. This is the dramatic, wild side of Plas Cadnant: moving water, mossy stone and dappled woodland light. For couples who want cinematic, atmospheric portraits with real natural drama, this is one of the most distinctive backdrops anywhere on Anglesey.

Woodland and estate character

The upper woodland garden, with its stone outcrops and the remains of a nineteenth-century folly, offers quieter, light-dappled corners for relaxed portraits, while the historic house and outbuildings give architectural character and sheltered options if the Anglesey weather turns.

Within a single estate there is enormous variety, which makes it ideal for a portrait or style session that still feels full of range.

Planning tips & FAQ

A note for couples and local venues

Plas Cadnant works beautifully as an addition to a wedding held elsewhere on Anglesey or across North Wales, a quiet hour away from the celebration for signature portraits, or as a dedicated pre-wedding and engagement location. For local venues, stylists and planners looking for a striking backdrop for a styled shoot, it offers a genuinely distinctive setting. If you would like to add Plas Cadnant to your wedding or arrange a session here, I would love to help.

What happens if it rains at Plas Cadnant?

Plas Cadnant is a gardens estate open to visitors, so portrait sessions are arranged around access and light. The walled garden, valley waterfalls and woodland each sit a short walk apart, giving real variety in a single visit, with sheltered corners if it rains.

Can we have natural photographs as well as editorial portraits?

Yes. Most of the day is captured naturally and unobtrusively, focusing on real emotion, family, atmosphere and the flow of the wedding. For portraits, I use gentle direction so the images feel refined without looking stiff or overly posed.

When is the best time for portraits at Plas Cadnant?

The best time depends on the season, weather and timeline, but softer light later in the day is often beautiful for couple portraits. During the pre-wedding design consultation, I look at the venue, light and timings to plan the strongest options.

Do you include a venue consultation?

Yes. My wedding packages include a pre-wedding venue design consultation, where we plan light, portrait locations, rain options and the flow of the photography. This is especially useful at a venue like Château Rhianfa, where there are several strong photographic areas.
