A day in London: chasing light from St Dunstan in the East to Borough Market

Some days remind you why you fell in love with this craft. Tuesday was one of them. I spent the day in London with my mentor Fiona Elizabeth of The Wedding Photography Mentor, for a wedding photography masterclass built around one idea: that a bride, a veil and honest light are all you truly need, if you know how to watch for the moment.

We began in the church garden at St Dunstan in the East, a medieval church left open to the sky, where the ruined arches hold the morning light like a held breath. There is a reason photographers speak of this place quietly, as if not to give it away. Against those weathered doorways, a lifted veil becomes weightless, and a portrait becomes something closer to memory.

From there we crossed Tower Bridge and worked our way to the Church of St Magnus the Martyr, photographing inside and through the churchyard. Candlelit shadow one minute, warm stone and open sky the next. It is the kind of contrast a wedding day gives you constantly, and learning to move between the two without missing a beat is half the discipline.

The afternoon carried us to The Barrow Boy and Banker, where a marble staircase and that beautiful curved rail gave us pure elegance, then on through into the life and noise of Borough Market to finish. Grand architecture to market bustle in a single day: exactly the range a real wedding asks of you.

Our model Katy Ann was extraordinary. Unhurried, expressive, and generous with every frame, she made the whole day feel effortless, and these images belong to her patience as much as to our cameras.
